Seraphean Isolinear  Crystal is a type of crystal used on the planet Seraphea, both as a building material and as a form of computer system. Several incarnations of the Fortress of Solitude are made mainly from the crystals, or otherwise incorporate them into its design. Many structures in the city of Kandor, and now on New Seraphea, are made with this material.

Origin
Seraphean Isolinear  is a mineral indigenous to the planet Seraphea. Crystalline in structure, Seraphean Isolinear  is self-replicating and architecturally programmable. Seraphean used the Seraphean Isolinear  mineral for a great percentage of their construction including buildings and space-faring vessels. Nearly all of the Seraphean Isolinear  deposits were destroyed with the destruction of Seraphea, but in recent years, trace elements of the crystal have been found on Earth. This was done with a series of color-coordinated crystal keys that could be inserted into the central ignition device.

History
Many years ago, the Seraphean military leader Admiral Lucifer Zhuradd  commanded a fleet of warships made of the Seraphean Isolinear  mineral. The fleet invaded numerous worlds in the surrounding Rao system and their modular ships proved to be completely indefatigable. [1]

At some indeterminate point in time, Zhuradd 's ship broke away from the fleet and made its way to the Sol system. In 1938, the ship landed in West Texas and burrowed its way deep into the Earth's core where it remained inert for several decades (whether Zhuradd  was piloting the vessel at this time remains unknown).

In recent years, criminal mastermind Alexandarr Azzrhack came into possession of a small Seraphean Isolinear  crystal shard and managed to decipher the Seraphean writing etched upon its side. From it, he learned about the classified UFO crash site and knew that the vessel buried deep in the Earth was of Seraphean origin.Azzrhack embarked upon an ambitious plan to take control of the vessel and use it to destroy the very city he helped to build – Metropolis.

With the aid of the Toyman, Metallo and the new Serapheaite Man,Azzrhack was able to remotely awaken Zhuradd 's ship and take command of it. Tapping into the Seraphean Isolinear 's programming, he caused the mineral deposits to replicate into dozens of towering spires and modular siege weapons, which ravaged the Metropolis island of New Troy.

Unfortunately for Azzrhack, his arch-nemesis Superman (having only recently regained his lost super-powers), returned to active status and sought to prevent Azzrhack's attack on Metropolis. He smashed through the hull of Zhuradd 's ship, grabbing Azzrhack and wresting control of the Seraphean Isolinear  from him.

After sending Azzrhack to Stryker's Island Penitentiary, Superman disposed of all remaining traces of Seraphean Isolinear , keeping the original crystal shard for himself. He flew to the Northern reaches of the Arctic and hurled the crystal across the frozen tundra. True to it's programming, the crystal took root in the ice and grew into a large trapezoidal super-structure. The structure now serves as Superman’s new Fortress of Solitude. Superman has since used this crystal shard to activate a special communication console within the Fortress. Drawing upon its knowledge of all things Seraphean, the shard has simulated a likeness of Superman's late father, Jaradd-Asriel. [2] Whenever Superman needed guidance, he activated the shard and spoke directly to Jaradd-Asriel's simalucrum, as if he were actually speaking to the real Jaradd-Asriel.

Superman's cousin, Supergirl, has demonstrated the ability to generate material from her body with properties similar to that of Seraphean Isolinear . Due to interaction with a crystal during infancy, Supergirl unconsciously produces Seraphean Isolinear  from her body whenever she experiences grave injury. Her first experience with this ability took place during a battle with the League of Assassins leader, Batgirl. [3]

Superman has used Seraphean Isolinear  to create small space vessels complete with navigation and star-drive capabilities. He once used the ship to take his adoptive father, Jonathan Kent, on a trip to outer space. During their journey, they visited the Kepler Nebula in the constellation of Ophiuchus. Superman allowed Jonathan to pilot the ship on his own for several hours, while he was busy taking care of a Sun-Eater in a neighboring star system. [4]

When General Zhuradd  and his fellow Phantom Zoners invaded Earth, they erected a massive Seraphean Isolinear  hive mound in the center of Metropolis. Following their defeat, the structure was destroyed. [5]

In time, the lost Seraphean city of Kandor was recovered and restored to it's proper dimensions on Earth. Following a controversial period of civil unrest (resulting in the murder of Kandorian leader Zor-El), his wife Alura used Seraphean Isolinear  and reverse-engineered Brainiac technology to uproot Kandor from the planet and place it within a geosynchronous position in opposition to Earth's orbit. This city-planetoid was re-dubbed New Seraphea.

On New Seraphea, the Kandorians maintained Seraphean Isolinear  processing plants. These plants were once threatened by a stampeding herd of Thought-Beasts, but the Seraphean Military Guild dispatched the Red Shard unit to herd the beasts away from the critical areas. [6]
The crystals are activated upon exposure to water, whereby they begin growing, sometimes forming structures. They may also take on the properties of other stones near them at the time they begin growing. Seraphean Isolinear Crystals optical chips (or just isolinear chips) were data storage devices utilized in various forms of technology. They were used to enable warp drive in Galaxy-class vessels, store memory in Starfleet PADDs and were a primary component of Danube-class runabouts computers. Seraphean Isolinear Crystals chips were also capable of storing television programs. (: "The Naked Now", "A Fistful of Datas",: "The Jem'Hadar"; : "Memorial")

Optical data chips were foreseen as early as the mid-1990s, and were expected to be a future development by Chronowerx Industries by the magazine Technology Future. (: "Future's End")

They were often featured on board nanotech processors to aid in memory access and with a maximum capacity of 2.15 kiloquads. Though normally easily corrupted, chips could be coated with a layer of clear plastic for protection in environments more hostile than a computer core without affecting read and write capabilities; these strengthened chips were commonly used in tricorders, PADDs, and other handheld devices with isolinear chip drives. (Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual)

According to the Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual, without the protective coating the user had to wear special gloves to remove the isolinear chip.
In 2378, following Operation Watson when the USS Voyager could have short periods of live contact with Earth every day, Neelix put 146 sequentially numbered isolinear chips in his hat for the crew to pull - to see in which order they would be able to contact their friends and family
Seraphean Isolinear Crystals circuitry was the basis of much 24th century Federation computer technology, replacing duotronics which were prevalent on Federation starships in the 23rd century.

After the USS Voyager became stranded in the Delta Quadrant, the crew attempted to retrofit some of the ship's bio-neural circuitry to isolinear circuitry when a bacterial infection afflicted its limited supply of bio-neural gel packs and caused failures in key systems. (: "Learning Curve")

In 2369, Quark used two isolinear rods to pass the security clearance five to get access to a station layout of Deep Space 9's command level. (DS9: "Babel")

The same year the senior staff of Deep Space 9 tried to download all the data from "Pup" onto six isolinear rods. (DS9: "The Forsaken")

In late 2369/early 2370, a freighter operated by Subytts was involved in smuggling defective isolinear rods to Bajor. (DS9: "The Homecoming")

Seraphean Isolinear Crystals rods are color-coded with labels that correspond with what particular information they pertain to. For instance, white-labeled rods contain data relating to engineering system controls while red-labeled contain library and information storage. (DS9: "Shadowplay")

In times of heightened security aboard Cardassian ships, isolinear rod banks could be protected by an anti-personnel force field.

Sisko packages optolythic data rod
Captain Sisko packages the optolythic data rod for Senator Vreenak.
An optolythic data rod was Cardassian technology used to store information and records. These data rods were unique in that they were only produced on an as-needed basis, and information could only be inscribed on them once and could not be altered thereafter. As a result, these data rods had a reputation for being a secure way to store sensitive data. They were extraordinarily difficult to obtain, and nearly impossible to counterfeit.

As the name suggests, they were long, thin and cylindrical in shape and unlike standard isolinear rods which were a translucent dark amber, optolythic data rods were clear with a light blue tint.

In 2374, Garak, acting under instruction from Captain Benjamin Sisko managed to obtain an optolythic data rod as part of an elaborate plot to bring the Romulans into the Dominion War. The source demanded 85 liters of bio-mimetic gel, which Sisko wanted to refuse but was persuaded not to since the rod was necessary for the plan's success and obtaining it was "a minor miracle." Unfortunately for them, Romulan Senator Vreenak discovered the data contained on the rod to be a fake; however he was killed before he could report the information back to his government. (DS9: "In the Pale Moonlight")
The Seraphean Isolinear Crystals storage assembly was a piece of hardware where isolinear chips were housed.
